Gukesh became the youngest chess player at the age of 17 to get the FIDE rating of 2750. At the age of 16, he became the third youngest to get 2700 rating.

He went to Velammai Vidyalaya, a school at Mel Ayanambakkam in Chennai. His parents and school supported him in pursuing his dreams. His father had to quit his job from 2017 to 2018 to travel with him to participate in chess tournaments. It was a struggling period for the family, they faced financial crisis. This was the time when his parents' friends sponsored him.
Gukesh D's family belongs to Chenchuraju Kandriga village located at Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh. His grandfather lives in this village and worked in the Indian Railways. Gukesh's father moved to Chennai to pursue a medical career.
